This union is expected to be built around love for one another.
But in recent times, it has been observed that couples engage in domestic violence which often resorts to fatal consequences.
In November 2024, a 33-year-old housewife, Comfort Tinubu allegedly stabbed her 39-year-old husband Olusegun Tinubu to death during a dispute in Ibadan.
On January 3rd 2025, A Niger State housewife Fatima Dzuma allegedly killed her husband, Baba Aliyu, with a pestle while asleep in his house.
In the month of February 2025 alone, One ASP Caleb reportedly died following a violent confrontation with his wife Tate allegedly resulting in the death of both spouse in Ekiti state.
A 25-year-old Salamatu Danjuma, a resident of Tafawa Balewa LGA of Bauchi State allegedly killed her husband.
While the most recent was one Kelvin Izekor who allegedly murdered his wife, Success Izekor, in Benin City Edo State just eight months after marriage.
What could be the cause of these killings, and how can these be averted in marriages?
Findings from a cross section of the public revealed that childhood experience of violence and abuse is strongly connected with perception and perpetration of violence in marital life.
The respondents also attributed the cause of spousal killings to the illegal quest for wealth instead of studying their partner before marriage.
These respondents who include Prophetess Folake Akintan, Prophet Abel Ajala, and Barr. Benjamin Ojuma, attributed the cause of spousal killings to the lack of love amongst the couples.
For these marriage counsellors’ Richrose Benson and Pastor Donatus Omenlimen, economic pressure of the society is a major cause of the incidence.
The respondents suggested that government, parents, religious leaders and others should be more attentive to the situations between couples and base their interventions on the wellbeing of the couples rather than religious dictates and social desirability alone.
The respondents however advised that couples should seek help from appropriate persons when facing domestic violence in their marriages.
