Jos, Plateau State – April 17, 2025
In response to the recent wave of violence that has claimed over 100 lives in Plateau State, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has called on local leaders to unite the state’s diverse communities and work toward ending the bloodshed.
Chairman of the NGF and Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, made the appeal on Thursday during a condolence visit to the state following deadly attacks in Bokkos and Bassa local government areas. The coordinated assaults by suspected marauders have left residents reeling and communities devastated.
“We call on leaders and influencers across all communities and sectors in Plateau to join His Excellency [Governor Caleb Mutfwang] in the task of uniting the people and restoring sustainable peace,” Abdulrazaq stated.
He emphasized the need for community leaders, including youth representatives, to actively denounce violence and promote peaceful dialogue, fairness, and mutual respect.
“Sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace,” he added. “Plateau is rich in potential, particularly in agriculture and tourism, but these prospects are threatened if violence continues to overshadow the region.”
The visit by the NGF follows a similar trip earlier this week by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who assured residents that those responsible for the killings would be brought to justice.
President Bola Tinubu has also condemned the attacks, describing them as “heinous and unacceptable.” Meanwhile, opposition leader Peter Obi criticized what he termed repetitive condemnations, urging the government to prioritize security and take urgent action.
Governor Abdulrazaq commended Governor Mutfwang for his leadership during the crisis and reiterated the NGF’s solidarity with the people of Plateau State.
“On behalf of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the people of our states, I bring you sincere condolences on the tragic loss of lives. We pray for the repose of the victims’ souls and for the restoration of peace across affected communities,” he said.
