NUJ Edo Hails Philip Shaibu’s Appointment as DG of National Institute for Sports

Benin City, May 25, 2025 – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, has congratulated Comrade Philip Shaibu on his recent appointment as the Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement jointly signed by the council’s Chairman, Festus Alenkhe, and Secretary, Andy Egbon, the NUJ described Shaibu’s appointment as a well-deserved recognition of his unwavering dedication to public service and long-standing commitment to sports development and youth empowerment.

The union expressed confidence in Shaibu’s capacity to provide visionary leadership and implement transformative reforms at the Institute. It noted that his wealth of experience in governance and grassroots mobilisation would be instrumental in repositioning the NIS to meet its core mandate of producing elite coaches, sports administrators, and researchers who can enhance Nigeria’s international sporting reputation.

“This is a great opportunity to inject fresh energy and innovation into the nation’s sports sector,” the NUJ stated, while pledging its full support for the former Edo State deputy governor in his new national assignment.

The union also expressed pride in the recognition of an illustrious son of Edo State and anticipated a new era of excellence under Shaibu’s leadership at the NIS.
