A newly identified terror group known as Mahmuda has reportedly surfaced in Nigeria’s North Central region, unleashing a wave of violence and instability across rural communities surrounding the Kainji Lake National Park, which stretches across Kwara and Niger States.
According to multiple reports, the group has been carrying out coordinated attacks in various communities within Kaiama Local Government Area, including Kemaanji, Tenebo, Baabete, Nuku, and Nanu, as well as the Yashikira District of Baruten LGA, all in Kwara State. Mahmuda’s operations have also spread into Babana and Wawa Districts of Borgu LGA in Niger State.
Tragedy struck on Wednesday when the group reportedly ambushed a local vigilante team in Kemaanji, resulting in the death of over 15 vigilantes and villagers. Eyewitnesses say the attackers are led by an individual known for issuing threats through voice messages. The group is allegedly involved in a series of violent crimes including killings, abductions, and extortion through ransom demands.
Security intelligence platform Eons Intelligence has confirmed the group’s emergence and the escalating threat it poses in the region.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but security experts are calling for urgent intervention to prevent further loss of lives and restore peace in the affected communities.
