NDLEA INTERCEPTS OVER 53,000KG OF DRUGS WORTH ₦777 MILLION IN SIX MONTHS — COMMANDER

As part of activities marking the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) held a press conference on Monday, June 23, to highlight its recent achievements.

State Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed that the command intercepted a total of 53,520.80 kilograms of illicit drugs with an estimated street value of ₦777 million in the past six months.

EBS correspondent, Nafeesah Bello, reports that the press briefing took place at the NDLEA headquarters in Benin City, where Commander Ofoyeju showcased the seized substances.

The NDLEA boss said the successful interceptions were the result of evidence-led operations, which also led to the arrest of suspected drug traffickers in various parts of the state. Notably, a supermarket in Ekpoma was shut down for allegedly selling assorted illegal drugs.

In the area of drug rehabilitation, Commander Ofoyeju revealed that the agency provided brief intervention services to 194 clients, comprising 135 males and 59 females, who are battling drug abuse disorders. He commended the Edo State Government for its support and collaboration in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

During the event, some of the arrested suspects spoke to journalists, revealing the circumstances that led them into the illicit trade.

Commander Ofoyeju appealed to members of the public to assist the agency with credible intelligence to enhance its operations. He also issued a warning to parents and guardians to be vigilant, particularly regarding cannabis-laced cookies and sweets now being circulated.
