The Kwara State House of Assembly has urgently called for a major review of the state’s security framework, citing alarming reports of escalating terrorist, bandit, and kidnapping activities in several local government areas.
During a plenary session on Tuesday, Speaker Yakubu Danladi led a debate in which lawmakers expressed deep concern over the increasing wave of violent attacks and abductions in Baruten, Kaima, and Oke-Ero Local Government Areas.
Magaji Oba Abdulkadir (Ilorin Central) raised the motion, highlighting that Kwara, once a symbol of peace and unity, is now facing an escalating security crisis. The lawmaker warned that the state risks losing its historical peace if the threat is not swiftly addressed.
“It is heartbreaking that the once harmonious Kwara, known for its unity, is now under attack by terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers who operate with impunity,” Hon. Magaji stated. He emphasized that the ongoing criminal activities were not only threatening lives but also displacing families and destroying livelihoods, marking a significant humanitarian and developmental crisis.
The Assembly specifically pointed to the recent kidnappings of two prominent local government officials — the Director of Personnel Management and the Director of Legal Services in Oke-Ero Local Government Area — as key examples of the state’s deteriorating security.
“These abductions are a wake-up call. If not urgently addressed, the security situation could spiral further, eroding the peace and stability Kwara has always enjoyed,” Hon. Magaji warned.
The Assembly urged Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to direct the State Security Council to implement more comprehensive measures. In addition to bolstering security personnel, lawmakers also advocated for enhanced logistical support to vulnerable regions and the establishment of a Victim Support Fund to assist those affected by violence.
While acknowledging Governor AbdulRazaq’s past efforts, such as his recent visit to affected areas and the donation of 150 motorcycles to boost local security patrols, Hon. Magaji emphasized the need for proactive, long-term solutions. The lawmaker stressed that these were not just symbolic gestures but crucial actions needed to restore confidence and ensure the safety of Kwara’s communities.
