PDP Vows Legal Battle Over Okowa, Oborevwori Defections, Predicts APC Implosion

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced its intention to pursue legal action following the mass defection of key figures from its Delta State chapter, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party described the defections as both a “painful betrayal” and a “blessing in disguise,” asserting that it will reclaim its lost mandates through the courts.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja after the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting on Tuesday, PDP Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, said the party has instructed its legal team to begin proceedings to recover seats held by defectors.

“As far as the Electoral Act is concerned, whenever you leave a party, you must vacate the seat you occupied under that platform,” Damagum said.

Despite acknowledging the political setback, Damagum insisted the PDP remains resilient.

“This party has weathered worse storms. What we’re seeing now is nothing new — we will emerge stronger,” he added.

The party has dissolved all existing structures in Delta State that were vacated by the defectors. A South-South Zonal Caretaker Committee led by Mr. Emma Ogidi has been appointed to manage the state’s affairs and restructure local operations.

Ogidi confirmed the assignment and outlined the committee’s immediate priorities.

“We are tasked with stabilizing the party in Delta, rebuilding confidence, and identifying credible members to fill vacant positions. It was an unexpected blow, but we’re moving forward,” he said.

Meanwhile, PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Senator Ebere Wabara, expressed optimism, suggesting that the ruling APC may soon face internal crises due to its growing number of entrants.

“This may turn out to be a blessing. The APC is swelling beyond control — it’s only a matter of time before it collapses under its contradictions,” he remarked.

Responding to media inquiries, Senator Okowa confirmed that he consulted with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar before switching allegiance. He dismissed speculations that his move was triggered by pressure from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“There was no persecution or hounding. This was a decision driven by political alignment and what I believe is best for my state and Nigeria,” Okowa said.

The PDP also disclosed that its National Executive Committee (NEC) will meet on May 27, while a national convention has been tentatively scheduled for August 28–30, during which a new leadership is expected to be elected.

Damagum encouraged members and supporters not to lose hope.

“We are going to court. We are reorganizing. And we are preparing for 2027. Nigerians will speak again — loudly and clearly — against the hardship imposed by this ruling party.”
