Gang accused of abducting and killing Hope Georgewill despite ₦2 million ransom payment
PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria — The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the killing of four suspected kidnappers allegedly responsible for the abduction and murder of Hope Georgewill, Chief Executive Officer of HMG Attitude Limited.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the suspects were part of a notorious gang of sea pirates linked to a string of abductions in Rivers State and neighbouring regions.
Georgewill and two other individuals were abducted on March 26 while traveling along the Cotton Channel in Bakana River. Despite a ransom of ₦2 million being paid for his release, the CEO was ultimately killed. His body was recovered and deposited at a local mortuary.
Police launched an intensive, intelligence-led investigation, which led to the arrest of two members of the gang. These suspects guided officers from the Anti-Cultism Unit to a remote hideout in a creek off the Bonny waterways. Upon arrival, the officers came under heavy gunfire.
“Our operatives responded with decisive force,” said Iringe-Koko. “During the exchange of gunfire, two suspects were fatally wounded. The two suspects who led police to the hideout also attempted to escape but were apprehended with gunshot injuries.”
All four suspects were taken to the Police Clinic for treatment but were confirmed dead on arrival.
Recovered items from the gang’s base include an operational speedboat, 80 horsepower and 70 horsepower outboard engines, a mobile phone belonging to the late Georgewill, one live cartridge, and various food supplies.
Iringe-Koko added that the command is actively working to apprehend the remaining fleeing gang members and reiterated the police’s commitment to maintaining public safety.
“The Rivers State Police Command remains resolutely committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and visitors in the state,” the statement read.
Investigations are ongoing.
