Governor Okpebholo Orders Crackdown on Cult Violence in Edo State

The Edo State Government has launched a renewed offensive against cult-related violence following a fresh wave of deadly clashes in parts of the state.

Governor Monday Okpebholo, in a directive issued on Tuesday, ordered security agencies to intensify operations and ensure that all individuals involved in cultism and violent crime are apprehended and prosecuted.

The directive follows reports of renewed cult activities that have resulted in fatalities and disruptions in local communities.

In a statement released by the government, it was recalled that after a similar outbreak of violence in 2024, Governor Okpebholo convened a high-level security meeting involving heads of security agencies, traditional rulers, and community leaders to address the growing insecurity.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on cultism, warning that no individual or group would be allowed to undermine public peace.

“Our government will not tolerate any form of lawlessness. We have directed law enforcement agencies to move swiftly, intensify surveillance in known hotspots, and restore order,” the statement read.

The Edo State Government also called on residents, traditional institutions, youth leaders, and community stakeholders to collaborate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and offering credible information.

Governor Okpebholo stressed that restoring peace and safeguarding lives remains a top priority of his administration, and assured the public that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure the state is safe for all.
