The Edo State Government, through its Ministry of Mining, has engaged with the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) to address challenges and enhance stability in the state’s oil and gas sector.
During the meeting, the Commissioner for Mining, Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, reaffirmed Governor Sen. Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to addressing residents’ concerns, particularly the issues affecting premium motor spirit (PMS) marketers.
Key Challenges and Government’s Response
Hon. Ijegbai acknowledged complaints regarding corroded pipelines and assured IPMAN representatives that he would escalate the matter to the State Governor. He emphasized that given the presence of storage facilities at the Benin Depot, there should be no inconsistencies in PMS supply. To resolve this, he called for the association’s cooperation in conducting a thorough investigation to gather accurate data on the depot and pipeline conditions.
He further urged marketers to:
- Maintain fair product pricing once supply issues are resolved.
- Support government efforts to curb pipeline vandalism.
- Collaborate with authorities to ensure stable fuel distribution in the state.
Proposed CNG Partnership
The Commissioner also proposed a strategic partnership between PMS marketers and the state government to establish Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion centers and dispensing stations. He highlighted that this initiative would benefit both CNG investors and PMS marketers, creating new business opportunities while promoting cleaner energy alternatives.
Concerns Raised by IPMAN
Representatives of IPMAN outlined key challenges affecting their operations, including:
- Deteriorating pipeline infrastructure, which has made pipeline transportation of PMS impossible, forcing marketers to rely on costly and risky tanker transport. They urged the government to engage the relevant authorities to find a lasting solution for pipeline distribution to the Benin Depot.
- Multiple taxation, with allegations that local government authorities impose arbitrary levies, increasing operational costs for marketers.
Way Forward
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to finding long-term solutions for fuel distribution in Edo State, strengthening industry-government collaboration, and ensuring that residents benefit from stable fuel supply and fair pricing.
