In a move to foster a conducive business environment and tackle challenges in the oil and gas sector, the Edo State Government, through its Ministry of Mining, has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Mid-West Zone of the Nigeria Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM).
The Commissioner for Mining, Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, made this pledge while hosting representatives of NALPGAM during a courtesy visit to his office in Benin City. He assured the delegation that their concerns would be addressed amicably, in line with existing laws and regulations in the state.
Addressing Key Challenges in the Gas Sector
Speaking on behalf of the association, NALPGAM Chairman, Mr. John Yakubu, expressed appreciation to the Commissioner and his team for their prompt response and willingness to engage in discussions aimed at resolving pressing industry issues.
Highlighting the challenges faced by gas marketers in Edo State, Mr. Yakubu raised concerns about:
- The removal of exclusivity in gas operations, which has resulted in gas plants being established within petrol stations and residential areas, increasing safety risks.
- The dormant state of the large gas plant at Ologbo, owned by the Federal Government, stressing that reviving it would ease gas supply, reduce prices, and improve distribution efficiency.
- The long travel distances required to source gas from other states, which impacts costs and logistics.
The Secretary of the Mid-West Zone of NALPGAM also pointed out additional concerns, including:
- Allocation issues by third-party agents from the Northern region.
- Excessive levies imposed on operators.
- Inadequate safety services provided by the Edo State Fire Service.
Government’s Assurance and Way Forward
Hon. Ijegbai assured the association that the government would take necessary steps to ensure the sector operates under safe and regulated conditions. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment while maintaining safety and compliance standards.
The meeting, which concluded on a positive note, was attended by key stakeholders, including:
- Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Mining, Mrs. Ese Matina
- Director of Risk, Operations & Compliance, Engr. Daniel Agboge
- Director of Shared Services, Mr. Agbonile Lucky
- Representatives of the Mid-West Zone of NALPGAM
The discussions reinforced the Edo State Government’s proactive approach to enhancing the oil and gas sector, ensuring both economic growth and public safety.
