The Edo State Diaspora Agency, a groundbreaking initiative and the first of its kind in the history of the state, has been officially established by Governor Monday Okpebholo. This agency was created with a clear mandate to enhance the social welfare of Edo indigenes living abroad, facilitate better coordination among Edo citizens in the diaspora, and establish a robust database management system to track and engage with Edo extractions worldwide. Additionally, the agency is tasked with fostering the economic and social development of the state through strategic policies and opportunities designed to integrate the contributions of its diaspora population.
During a recent media engagement, the Director-General of the agency, Mrs. Loretta Ogboro-Okor, elaborated on the critical role the organization is set to play in strengthening the relationship between Edo State and its diaspora community. She emphasized that the agency is fully committed to its mission of promoting collaboration, harnessing the potential of Edo indigenes abroad, and ensuring that their contributions significantly impact the state’s growth. According to her, the agency will serve as a bridge between the government and Edo citizens residing in different parts of the world, ensuring that their voices are heard, their rights are protected, and their investments are channeled towards meaningful development.
Mrs. Ogboro-Okor also reiterated the agency’s commitment to tackling pressing issues such as illegal immigration and human trafficking, which have long been a concern for Edo State. She revealed that the agency would work closely with diasporans, relevant ministries, departments, and various organizations to address these challenges effectively. This synergy, she noted, would not only protect Edo citizens abroad but also help in curbing the dangers associated with unregulated migration and exploitation.
The Director-General further explained that the agency would implement policies that encourage skill acquisition, professional networking, and investment opportunities for Edo indigenes in the diaspora. By leveraging partnerships with international organizations, the agency aims to create a structured framework that will attract investment back home, foster entrepreneurship, and generate employment for the youth population in Edo State. The agency will also serve as a platform for Edo indigenes abroad to participate actively in governance and development initiatives within their home state.
Governor Okpebholo, who appointed Mrs. Ogboro-Okor as the pioneer Director-General of the Edo State Diaspora Agency in March 2025, recognized her wealth of experience and dedication to diaspora engagement. Her previous roles in the Edo Diaspora Working Group and the Edo State Focus Group Worldwide played a significant part in her selection. With her leadership, the agency is expected to make substantial strides in strengthening ties with the diaspora and ensuring that Edo indigenes abroad have a structured channel to contribute meaningfully to the state’s progress.
As the agency sets out to achieve its objectives, the government and stakeholders are optimistic about the positive impact this initiative will have on Edo State. The establishment of the Edo State Diaspora Agency marks a significant milestone in the state’s history, and its success will undoubtedly set a precedent for other states in Nigeria looking to engage their diaspora communities more effectively.
