Abuja — A witness for the Federal Government testified in the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday that no weapons of terrorism or violence were recovered from Nnamdi Kanu, the Biafra nation agitator, during his arrest in Lagos on October 15, 2015.
The witness, identified as PWAAA, an operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), further confirmed that no arms of public disturbance were found with Kanu’s associate, who was arrested alongside him.
During cross-examination by Kanu’s defense lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi SAN, the DSS operative explained that the items recovered from Kanu were personal belongings and did not appear to be offensive on their own. However, he suggested that the intention behind possessing the items could be deemed suspicious.
PWAAA also admitted that his primary mandate during Kanu’s arrest was to enforce the arrest order and obtain a statement from the defendant. He confirmed that although Kanu’s cell phone was analyzed, the report was not presented to the court because it was considered immaterial to the case.
The DSS operative acknowledged that the impounded items, which had been in their possession for over 10 years, may have lost value or become obsolete by now.
He further disclosed that there were no confrontations with Kanu on issues of terrorism during his arrest and no interrogation involving other individuals to confront him about the charges. Additionally, the witness admitted that Kanu’s statement was obtained without the presence of his legal counsel.
A list of items recovered from Kanu and entered as evidence includes:
-
Laptops, iPads, MacBooks, and various electronic devices
-
Multiple modems, flash drives, and cell phones, including brands such as Samsung, Motorola, and Nokia
-
A collection of wristwatches, perfumes, shoes, and personal accessories
-
Documents, including a Nigerian passport, British passport, and IPOB-related materials
These items, which were seized at the time of Kanu’s arrest, have been cataloged in detail and presented in the ongoing trial.
The case continues as the court assesses the evidence and testimonies surrounding the arrest and charges against Kanu.
