Popular Lagos socialite and businessman Emeka Okonkwo, better known as E-Money, was released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday evening after hours of interrogation.
E-Money was arrested on Monday night at his residence in the Omole area of Lagos and taken to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja. His arrest, sources within the anti-graft agency said, was linked to alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency and defacing of foreign currencies—specifically, the spraying of U.S. dollars at public events, in violation of the Foreign Exchange Act.
“On Monday night, we arrested E-Money for Naira abuse and defacing foreign currencies,” an EFCC official confirmed. “Specifically, he was alleged to have sprayed U.S. dollars, which contravenes existing financial regulations. Preliminary investigations are ongoing, and he will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”
Following his release, E-Money took to Instagram (@iam_emoney1) to thank his supporters and reassure fans. Sharing a video of himself at home, he captioned it: “No tension, everywhere good. I see all your love and support. God bless you all.” The video featured the gospel track, “Thank you for saving me, thank you my Lord.”
Fellow socialite Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, also celebrated the release on Instagram, posting: “My brother don fall out. To God be the glory.”
As of the time of filing this report, official confirmation from EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale had not been received despite multiple attempts to reach him.
