Gov. Okpebholo Inspects 400 Hectares of Farmland, Road Projects in Edo Central …reiterates commitment to food security and rural development

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has restated his administration’s commitment to boosting food security and infrastructure development in the state during an inspection tour of key agricultural and road projects in Esan Central Local Government Area.

The Governor visited the Uwesan Farm Settlement, a 400-hectare farmland being prepared for large-scale cultivation of maize and cassava. He was accompanied by investors and top government officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Peter Osagie.

Speaking at the site, Governor Okpebholo said the farmland is part of a broader strategy to ensure food sufficiency across Edo State. “We are serious about farming and determined to make sure our people have enough food to eat. This land is very fertile, and planting will commence as early as next week,” he said.

He noted that similar farm settlements have been established in Edo South and Edo North to further drive agricultural development.

The Governor also expressed appreciation to investors who joined the inspection, adding that their technical partners are expected to visit soon to begin implementation and support activities.

In addition to the farm tour, Governor Okpebholo inspected the ongoing construction of the 2.3km Illeh-Akho-Irrua road, complete with side drains to improve water management. He commended the quality of work and emphasized that the road, which connects Esan Central and Esan West LGAs, would enhance rural connectivity and stimulate local economic activities.

Dr. Peter Osagie described the Uwesan Farm Settlement as a communal land with the full support of the local community. “The land is ideal for cassava farming, which serves both human consumption and the animal feed industry. With two ethanol plants in the state dependent on cassava, farmers are now guaranteed buyers and strong market demand,” he said.

He added that the government is also exploring opportunities to expand cultivation and attract more private sector investment to drive agricultural growth.

The governor concluded by assuring residents of continued oversight and support to ensure all projects meet quality standards and achieve the state’s developmental goals.
