Ondo, Nigeria – The Acting Vice Chancellor of Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo State, Professor Samuel Akintunde, has appealed to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) to expedite the disbursement of student loans to 995 applicants from the institution.
Speaking during a press briefing on Monday ahead of the university’s 35th convocation ceremony, Prof. Akintunde disclosed that the university is still awaiting the release of ₦68,316,200 from NELFund on behalf of the students who applied for financial support.
“We are yet to receive any disbursement from NELFund, but we remain hopeful,” the VC stated. “The total amount expected is ₦68,316,200 for 995 students who successfully applied. This figure does not include the ₦20,000 monthly stipends promised under the student loan scheme.”
Prof. Akintunde emphasized that the loan is not granted automatically, noting that only students who apply are eligible. Those who fail to apply must find alternative means to pay their fees.
Meanwhile, the vice chancellor announced that a total of 18,825 students will graduate during the forthcoming convocation ceremony. The graduating students comprise six different academic sessions, including 6,269 from the National Certificate in Education (NCE) programme, 11,501 from the degree programme, and 1,055 from part-time programmes.
As part of the convocation highlights, the university will confer honorary doctorate degrees on three distinguished Nigerians, including the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
According to the VC, Senator Tinubu, an alumnus of the institution’s Botany and Zoology department, is being recognized for her contributions to education and her role in the transition of the institution from a college of education to a full-fledged university.
“The First Lady’s background as a teacher and her consistent support for the university’s upgrade made her a deserving recipient of this honor,” Akintunde said.
The convocation ceremony is scheduled to take place between Thursday and Friday, with a series of activities lined up to mark the milestone.
