Supporters Rally Behind Edo State Anti-Cultism Law as Government Urges Collaboration

Benin City – Supporters of the newly signed Edo State Anti-Cultism Law, 2025, gathered at the Government House in Benin City to express their solidarity with the government’s stance against cult-related activities.

Addressing the demonstrators, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Paul Ohonbamu, emphasized the importance of partnership between the government and civil society organizations (CSOs) in the ongoing campaign to eradicate cultism in the state.

“The fight against cultism is not a battle the government can win alone. We need the collective support of the people, especially civil society actors, to secure the lives and future of our citizens,” Ohonbamu stated.

Speaking on behalf of the Edo Civil Society Organizations, Coordinator Agho Omobude commended the government’s commitment but urged it to ensure full adherence to due process in the implementation of the law. He also raised concerns regarding certain provisions within the legislation, calling for a review to safeguard citizens’ rights.

Since its signing into law, the Edo State Anti-Cultism Law, 2025 has continued to generate strong public support, aimed at curbing cult-related violence and protecting the safety of residents across the state.
