The Nigerian Senate this Thursday suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for misconduct and refusal to comply with the chamber’s sitting arrangement during plenary two weeks ago.
This followed recommendations by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.
Presenting its report, Chairman of the Committee, Senator Neda Imasuen explained that the
committee had reviewed the petition against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, taking into account the Nigerian Constitution, Senate standing rules, and
the principles of equity and justice.
He said although Akpoti-Uduaghan was invited to appear before the Committee, she failed to turn up.
A six month suspension was handed down to Akpoti-Uduaghan with effect from 6th March, 2025.
She is suspended from all legislative activities as her office will be locked for the
duration of the suspension, and all Senate properties in her possession must be returned.
She is also barred from entering the National Assembly premises, along with her staff.
Her salaries and allowances are suspended, and her
security details withdrawn.
During her suspension, she can not represent herself locally or internationally as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
In addition, she must submit a written apology before the Senate will consider lifting or reducing her suspension.
Some senators condemned the actions of Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro pleaded on Akpoti-Uduaghan’s behalf for a reduced suspension of three months.
The suspension for six months was sustained by the Senate President after a voice vote.
After the suspension, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan called it an injustice as she was then escorted out of the Red chamber.
