A female advocacy program titled “Save the Girl Child Initiative” was recently held at the Main Auditorium of the University of Benin. The event was organized by the Office of the Vice President, UNIBEN Students’ Union Government, in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady of Edo State and the Ministry of Women Affairs.
Empowering the Future
The event brought together a diverse audience—mainly female students from various departments of the University of Benin—alongside key stakeholders, all united in one goal: to inspire and empower the girl child to strive for excellence in any career path she chooses.
Stakeholders including officials from the Ministry of Women Affairs and UNICEF young influencer Isabel Anani delivered motivating talks, urging attendees to stay resolute, take up space confidently, and embrace leadership roles in society.
Addressing Challenges and Changing the Narrative
According to Edesili Anani, Coordinator for the Office of the Edo State First Lady, despite the persistent challenges facing the girl child—such as limited access to education, healthcare disparities, gender stereotypes, exploitation, and violence—the narrative can be changed. She emphasized the importance of supporting girls through education, healthcare, and safety initiatives, while also fostering pride and respect for girls and women in all spheres.
The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development lent its full support to the program. Representing the Commissioner, Bisi Idaomi, was the Permanent Secretary, Joy Ihensenken, who reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to female empowerment initiatives.
Igniting a Positive Mindset
Favour Omotemen, Vice President of the UNIBEN Students’ Union Government, said the program was organized to reignite a positive mindset among female students and to encourage self-worth, resilience, and ambition.
Highlights of the Event
The event featured a dramatic presentation, award recognitions—including a special honor for Edesili Anani—and the free distribution of sanitary pads to attendees, further emphasizing the practical support behind the advocacy.
The Save the Girl Child Initiative continues to stand as a call to action for inclusive development, gender equality, and the upliftment of the next generation of female leaders.
