Security Personnel Accused of Extorting Young Men Traveling from Ekiti to Ondo
ABUJA, Nigeria — The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an immediate investigation into allegations that officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) extorted ₦5.2 million from a group of young men traveling from Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, to Akure, Ondo State.
The alleged extortion came to light after a social media post went viral, accusing the NSCDC officers of demanding the hefty sum from the passengers.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Minister condemned the act, emphasizing the government’s commitment to tackling misconduct within its security agencies. Tunji-Ojo reiterated that no form of indiscipline would be tolerated, noting that such behavior undermines the professionalism of the security forces.
“We will not tolerate any form of misconduct from our security agencies,” Tunji-Ojo stated. “We are building a paramilitary force that is disciplined, professional, and serves Nigeria and Nigerians with dignity and patriotism.”
The Minister also made it clear that any officer found guilty of the alleged extortion would face the full weight of the law, reinforcing the government’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption and abuse of power within the ranks of the security forces.
Tunji-Ojo’s statement comes amid ongoing concerns about corruption and unethical practices within Nigeria’s security agencies, with the government actively taking steps to address the issue.
The investigation into the NSCDC officers’ conduct is set to be thorough, with authorities pledging transparency and accountability throughout the process.
