Maru, Zamfara State – Tragedy struck Mani community in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State over the weekend as bandits launched a deadly attack, killing more than 20 farmers and abducting over 50 villagers.
In a further twist to the incident, a military jet deployed to the area reportedly opened fire on local vigilante members, mistaking them for the assailants.
The details were shared on Monday by security analyst Bakatsine via a post on X (formerly Twitter). He stated: “Yesterday, bandits attacked Mani community of Maru LGA in Zamfara and killed over 20 farmers. More than 50 persons are still in captivity. A military aircraft that came for protection mistakenly fired on vigilantes.”
The Nigerian military has not yet confirmed the report, and both the Zamfara State Government and relevant security agencies have remained silent on the development as of the time of filing this report.
Residents say the community is still reeling from the double tragedy, with many families mourning their loved ones and others anxiously awaiting word on those kidnapped.
This incident adds to the growing list of security challenges in Zamfara, a state that has been one of the hardest-hit by banditry and rural violence in recent years.
