The house of Representatives is seeking Federal Government assistance to communities affected by the recent flood and Windstorm in Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State
The attention of the Lower Chamber was drawn to the massive destruction that occurred in the area, by the leader of the House, Julius Ihonvbere through a motion of urgent public importance tilted “Urgent need for Federal Government, to intervene in Ekeke-Erah, Ake and Amoya-Otuo Communities in Owan East LGA of Edo State, Affected by Flood and windstorm”.
Ihonvbere who acknowledged the efforts of the Edo State Government, the Minority Leader of the Edo State House of Assembly and the Local Government in responding to the disaster, noted that the magnitude of the disaster requires additional support from the Federal Government.
He noted with concern, the unprecedented flooding disaster and widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure including a bridge in Ekeke, farmlands, and livelihoods.
The Leader informed the House that affected communities have been plunged into total darkness as a result of the flood that pulled down electric poles and damaged solar street lights.
He said “the affected communities are in dire need of emergency assistance, including relief food and medical materials, and reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.”
The House however urged the Federal government to direct the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide immediate relief materials, including food, water, blankets, mats, shelter, and medical supplies, to the affected communities.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs was also mandated to urgently respond to the needs of the Owan West people and other communities affected by the disasters.
