Edo Taskforce Busts Three-Man Kidnap Syndicate, Rescues Victim in Benin City

Benin City — Operatives of the Edo State Taskforce have arrested three suspected kidnappers and rescued a young woman during a routine patrol along the Aduwawa axis of Benin City.

The suspects—James Ehigator (Uromi), Atiku Muhammad (Suleja, Niger State), and Osas Iwagbonsoria (Ekpoma)—were intercepted while conveying the victim in an Audi vehicle with registration number EPE 427 GS.

Addressing journalists, the Commissioner for Security and Public Safety, Hon. Festus Ebea, said the arrest demonstrates the determination of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration to dismantle criminal networks and ensure the safety of residents across the state.

He disclosed that the Governor has directed all security agencies in Edo State, including the Edo State Security Corps, to intensify collaboration, strengthen intelligence sharing, and deploy modern surveillance tools to proactively combat crime, particularly during the festive season.

According to him, the state government has continued to provide logistical and operational support to security agencies to enhance coordinated surveillance and information-sharing.

Hon. Ebea cautioned residents to remain vigilant, warning against engaging with strangers who may pretend to be in distress or request directions as a tactic to lure unsuspecting victims.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the Taskforce acted on intelligence reports concerning suspicious activities around the Upper Mission Extension area. Items suspected to be linked to criminal operations were recovered from the suspects during the interception.

The rescued victim, who requested anonymity, said she was on her way to visit her elder sister when one of the suspects approached her under the guise of seeking directions and allegedly deceived her into entering the vehicle.

Commander of the Edo State Taskforce, CSP Michael Anetor, said operatives became suspicious during patrol, stopped the vehicle for a routine search, and noticed inconsistencies in the occupants’ responses, leading to further investigation and the eventual arrest.

The suspects are currently being profiled and will be handed over to relevant security agencies for further investigation and prosecution.

The Edo State Government reiterated its warning to criminal elements to desist from illegal activities, assuring residents that sustained security operations will continue to keep Edo State safe for law-abiding citizens.
