*Edo Security Squad orders businesses to install CCTV*

Edo State Security Squad has directed business owners across the state to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at their premises to strengthen efforts to tackle crime.

Addressing journalists in Benin City on Monday, the spokesperson for the Edo State Security Squad, Noah Idemudia, gave businesses until July 30, 2026, to install functional CCTV systems.

He said CCTV cameras would assist security agencies in investigating crimes, identifying suspects and gathering crucial evidence.

“Business owners are encouraged to install effective, working cameras within their business premises. We appeal to the general public and the business community to comply for everyone’s safety,” Idemudia said.

“With your cameras, we can piece together certain things as professionals. Please comply with us to make Edo a safe place.”

The spokesperson also warned against planned “7/7” celebrations reportedly organised by some cult groups, saying security agencies were prepared to clamp down on anyone involved.

“We are already taking action. You cannot carry out such acts in Benin City. Even if you go outside Benin, you will still be apprehended. So there is no point,” he said.

“If you already have the intention of celebrating, please cancel it now, because when you are arrested, you will be prosecuted accordingly.”

Idemudia reiterated the need to identify and profile community leaders across the state in collaboration with the Oba of Benin Palace.

He warned individuals falsely presenting themselves as community leaders to stop, saying anyone found impersonating recognised leaders would face legal action.

He also disclosed that the Edo State Security Squad recently arrested two criminal suspects in Auchi and Uromi over alleged cultism and unlawful possession of firearms.

According to him, the suspects will be arraigned before the mobile court established by the State government to accelerate the prosecution of suspected cultists and kidnappers.
