BENIN FLOODING: GOV OKPEBHOLO MOVES TO END CRISIS, ENGAGES EXPERTS TO REPLICATE AKWA IBOM MODEL

In a bold move to tackle the perennial flooding in Edo State—particularly in Benin City—Governor Monday Okpebholo has commissioned a team of environmental and hydrology experts to understudy and replicate the renowned flood control systems implemented in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States under former Governors Godswill Akpabio and Nyesom Wike.

This initiative reflects Governor Okpebholo’s pragmatic and data-driven approach to governance, focused on adopting proven models that deliver real, lasting impact.

The Akwa Ibom and Rivers examples, celebrated for transforming flood-prone areas into regions with effective water management infrastructure, now serve as the blueprint for Edo’s long-term solution.

With the rainy season nearing its peak, the timing of this intervention is strategic. The experts will conduct on-site assessments to observe firsthand the scale and behavior of flooding in Benin City and other vulnerable areas. Their work will cover terrain mapping, drainage analysis, and identification of key flashpoints.

A consortium of four technical firms has been engaged to carry out comprehensive feasibility studies and environmental assessments. Their findings will guide the design and implementation of a sustainable and permanent flood control system.

In addition, the administration will demolish structures illegally built along waterways—particularly in the Government Reservation Areas (GRA)—to make way for proper surface and underground drainage networks. Verified property owners will be duly compensated, while others will be relocated to safer areas.

Governor Okpebholo has emphasized that the project, set to begin after the peak rains, will be devoid of politics, corruption, or cosmetic fixes. Every kobo allocated will be accounted for and transparently deployed for its intended purpose—protecting lives, properties, and the environment.

Unlike the previous administration’s failed attempts, marred by mismanagement and diversion of funds, this effort will be comprehensive, transparent, and results-driven.

Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his commitment to making Benin City more resilient, livable, and economically vibrant. This intervention is part of his broader urban development agenda aimed at positioning Edo State as a model for modern infrastructure and environmental management in Nigeria.

The era of seasonal flooding crippling communities and threatening livelihoods in Edo is drawing to a close. Under Governor Okpebholo’s leadership, the people can now look forward to a safer, flood-free future anchored in proactive and responsive governance.
