Tinubu Announces Possible Reduction in Transport Fares From October 1

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that Nigerians could begin to experience lower transportation fares from October 1, 2026, as the Federal Government and state governors intensify efforts to reduce the cost of transportation across the country.

The President said the initiative will focus on the increased adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles as part of measures to reduce the cost of operating commercial transportation.

According to Tinubu, vehicles powered by CNG can achieve fuel savings of between 60 and 80 per cent compared with petrol-powered vehicles, potentially reducing the operating costs of transport operators and, in turn, lowering fares for commuters.

The Federal Government disclosed that more than 120,000 vehicles have already been converted to CNG, while plans are underway to expand CNG refuelling infrastructure across the country.

Tinubu further stated that a joint Federal and State committee will commence implementation of the measures immediately, with the goal of making transportation more affordable for Nigerians.

The initiative is expected to support commuters, reduce transportation-related expenses and encourage a gradual transition to cleaner and more cost-effective energy sources for road transportation.
