Lagos, July 6, 2025 – The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 52 suspected cultists during coordinated raids across Mushin and other identified hotspots, ahead of the annual 7:7 Cultism Day—a date often marred by violent attacks and reprisal killings by rival cult groups.
The arrest was part of proactive security operations led by the Command to forestall any form of violence or mayhem associated with July 7, traditionally marked by clashes among cult groups in the state.
In a statement issued today, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the suspects were apprehended while allegedly making preparations for coordinated attacks scheduled for Sunday. He disclosed that the suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has reiterated the Command’s firm resolve to ensure peace and security throughout the state. He confirmed that comprehensive measures have been activated, including the deployment of Anti-Cultism Squads, Tactical Units, Mobile Police Force (PMF), and Intelligence Units across the state.
“Credible intelligence received by the Command indicated that some cult groups were planning reprisals and attacks on July 7,” CP Jimoh stated. “We are prepared and will not allow any individual or group to disrupt the peace of our dear state.”
The CP also held an operational briefing with commanders of the Anti-Cultism and Tactical Squads earlier today, tasking them with ensuring no cultist is allowed to unleash violence in any part of Lagos.
He issued a stern warning to hotel operators, managers of event centres, and recreational facilities not to allow their premises to be used for cult gatherings. Violators, he said, will face the full wrath of the law.
Parents and guardians were also urged to warn their children and wards against involvement in cultism and other criminal activities.
“The consequences of engaging in cultism are severe,” the statement read. “We will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone found culpable.”
The Command called on all residents of Lagos to remain calm and vigilant, assuring that they can go about their lawful activities without fear. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or via the emergency lines: 08063299264 and 08065154338.
