— Gender Inclusion, Judicial Reforms, Devolution of Powers Top Priority
ABUJA – The House of Representatives’ Committee on Constitution Review will in July commence a series of zonal public hearings across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, aimed at gathering citizens’ input on proposed amendments to the 1999 Constitution.
Chairman of the Committee and Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, made the disclosure during a joint session with consultants and secretariat staff of both the Senate and House Constitution Review Committees in Abuja.
According to Kalu, the hearings will hold in two phases. The first phase, from Friday, July 11 to Sunday, July 13, 2025, will cover the northern zones — North Central, North West, and North East. The second phase will follow from Friday, July 18 to Sunday, July 20, for the southern zones — South South, South East, and South West.

Hon. Kalu said the hearings are designed to ensure that the constitutional amendment process is inclusive and people-driven. He reiterated the committee’s focus on critical areas such as gender inclusion, police and security reforms, fiscal federalism, judicial reforms, and devolution of powers.
He described the ongoing review as one of the most far-reaching in Nigeria’s democratic history, aimed at addressing key governance issues and strengthening democratic institutions.
The Deputy Speaker urged Nigerians from all walks of life to actively participate in the hearings, stressing that only through collective engagement can a truly reflective and progressive constitution be achieved.
