Benue Killings: CAN Urges Federal Government to Declare State of Emergency

Abuja, Nigeria — The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the ongoing wave of violence in Benue State, which has claimed over 200 lives, and called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the most affected areas.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, described the killings as “senseless” and “horrific,” adding that they have devastated families, displaced communities, and further undermined national security.

“For too long, the people of Benue have endured recurrent assaults, often attributed to armed groups, without meaningful intervention or justice,” Okoh said. “This persistent failure to protect citizens and hold perpetrators accountable has emboldened attackers and prolonged the cycle of violence.”

The CAN president urged the Federal Government to act urgently by deploying reinforced security personnel to safeguard vulnerable communities and restore calm.

He also called for a thorough, transparent investigation and the immediate prosecution of those responsible for the atrocities.

“These senseless killings have inflicted immeasurable pain on families and communities. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved and pray for the peaceful repose of the departed souls,” he stated.

Okoh appealed to the international community to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and rebuilding trust in the state, warning that continued inaction could further destabilize the region.

He reaffirmed CAN’s unwavering commitment to defending the sanctity of life and the dignity of all Nigerians, urging both government and civil society to prioritize justice, peace, and national unity.
