Benin City, Edo State – In a bid to curb the spread of diphtheria in Edo State, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, has paid an official visit to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). The visit, aimed at strengthening collaboration between the state government and the hospital, also included an inspection of patients receiving treatment for the disease.
Dr. Oshiomhole, accompanied by the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Stanley Okugbo, and other senior hospital staff, toured the hospital’s isolation center, which is designated for managing severe infectious diseases, including Ebola, Lassa fever, and now diphtheria.
Speaking during the visit, the commissioner commended the management of UBTH for its swift response and affirmed that many of the admitted patients are showing signs of improvement. He also stated that the state government has mobilized essential supplies and resources to support the hospital’s efforts while seeking collaboration from relevant health agencies.
“The government is fully committed to containing this outbreak,” Dr. Oshiomhole said. “We are working closely with UBTH and other stakeholders to ensure that every patient receives timely and effective care.”
Dr. Okugbo praised the government’s proactive approach, noting that the quick intervention has contributed significantly to the progress seen in several patients.
Providing further details, Dr. Eki Udoko Fidelis, Coordinator of the Children’s Emergency Ward, disclosed that 10 children diagnosed with diphtheria had been admitted to the hospital in recent weeks. He provided updates on their condition and ongoing treatment.
The Edo State Government is urging residents to remain vigilant, observe proper hygiene practices, and report any suspected cases of diphtheria to health authorities immediately.
As public health officials ramp up awareness campaigns and response mechanisms, the state continues to prioritize the health and safety of its residents amid the ongoing outbreak.
