Gov Okpebholo Declares Total War on Cultism, Vows Not to Back Down

Benin City — May 13, 2025

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to eradicating cultism across the state, vowing that no level of intimidation or threat will deter the government’s resolve.

Governor Okpebholo made the declaration while addressing a crowd of Edo youths who staged a peaceful rally to the Government House in Benin City on Tuesday. The demonstrators expressed solidarity with the government’s ongoing campaign against cult-related violence.

“Our people must be safe. If I had been killed by cultists in my youth, I wouldn’t be standing here as your governor today,” Okpebholo said. “Every drop of Edo blood is important to this administration. No matter the intimidation, the fight against cultism is total and irreversible.”

He emphasized that insecurity discourages investment and pledged to restore safety in order to attract development to the state.

“Investors will only come if they are sure of the safety of their lives and businesses. That’s why we are determined to rid Edo of cultists and criminal elements,” he added.

The governor also defended the recent demolition of a building linked to cult activity, noting that due process was followed.

“We are not randomly demolishing properties. Every action taken is in line with the law. I am not afraid, and neither are the people of Edo State. Together, we will stop cult killings,” he declared.

Earlier, the Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Edo State Chapter, Comrade Moses Aguinede Joseph, expressed strong support for the governor’s campaign. He said the youths had had enough of the menace of cultism and drug abuse.

“This peaceful rally is a direct outcome of a recent meeting of students and youth leaders from all three senatorial districts. We are tired of the bloodshed and fully support the governor’s measures to end cultism in Edo,” Joseph stated.

Also speaking, youth leader and human rights advocate, Comrade Precious Oruche, applauded the administration’s proactive stance.

“Before now, cultism had become almost a ritual in this state. We are grateful that your administration is taking it seriously. We urge law enforcement to act justly and avoid victimizing innocent citizens,” she said.

The rally marks a significant show of unity between the government and Edo youths in the fight to reclaim the state from cult-related violence.
