BORNO GOVT MOVES TO SHUT DOWN MUNA IDP CAMP

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has announced plans to close the Muna Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Maiduguri within the coming weeks.

The governor disclosed this during an early morning visit to the camp on Monday. The move is part of his administration’s broader strategy to shut down all formal IDP camps within Maiduguri and its environs, in a bid to facilitate long-term recovery and resettlement.

Muna IDP camp, established at the height of the Boko Haram crisis, currently houses an estimated 10,000 displaced persons. However, the governor noted that approximately 75 percent of the camp’s population has already been resettled.

Governor Zulum assured the remaining inhabitants of government support, including assistance to improve their means of livelihood as they prepare to return to their ancestral communities.

“The closure of this camp will be another significant milestone in our transition from emergency humanitarian interventions to sustainable recovery and development,” Zulum said.

Since assuming office, the governor has consistently prioritized the safe and dignified return of displaced persons. During his first term, he committed to closing all IDP camps in the state capital—a target he has largely achieved with the closure of over 12 camps to date.
