Drama Unfolds in PDP Leadership as Damagum Bows to Governors’ Pressure, Appoints Koshoedo as New Scribe

Abuja, April 24, 2025 — Tension and drama unfolded within the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, yielded to the pressure from the party’s powerful governors and appointed Mr. Koshoedo as the new National Secretary of the party.

The decision was made public on Thursday after intense deliberations and behind-the-scenes negotiations among party leaders, particularly state governors, who exerted considerable influence on the direction of the party’s leadership. Sources within the party revealed that the governors had been pushing for a change in the PDP’s leadership structure for weeks, arguing that such a move would strengthen the party ahead of upcoming elections and improve internal unity.

Koshoedo’s appointment marks a significant shift in the PDP’s leadership dynamics, as he is seen as a figure with the potential to bring stability and a renewed focus on party affairs, especially given his strong ties with key party stakeholders across the country.

While the move was hailed by some party members as a strategic step towards uniting the party, it has not been without controversy. Critics within the PDP have voiced concerns over the growing influence of governors in determining key party positions, fearing that the central leadership could become increasingly sidelined in favor of regional interests.

Damagum, who had been at the helm of the party following the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu, reportedly came under significant pressure from the governors to make the appointment, as part of efforts to smoothen tensions within the party. The decision to appoint Koshoedo, a prominent figure in the party, was seen as an attempt to balance competing interests and ensure the unity of the party ahead of key political battles in the coming years.

Koshoedo’s appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the party’s administrative functions, as well as to its strategies for upcoming elections. He is widely regarded as someone who can bridge gaps within the party while providing effective leadership at the national level.

The PDP’s internal struggle has been marked by factional disputes, with leadership changes and power struggles coming to the forefront in recent months. The appointment of Koshoedo, however, is seen as an attempt to bring much-needed cohesion, as the party prepares for future electoral challenges.

Party members are now watching closely to see whether this leadership reshuffle will stabilize the PDP or spark further divisions as the countdown to the next general election continues.
