Makurdi, April 21, 2025 – Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has raised an alarm over the escalating security crisis in the state, stating that communities are being attacked and gradually occupied by armed Fulani herdsmen.
Speaking during a mass at the Chapel of Grace, Government House, Makurdi, Governor Alia described the situation as a siege and urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
“If you hear something, say something. It will enable the security agents to move out there and repel the invaders,” he said.
The governor stated that the attacks on communities were not random but had a clear objective.
“We are under siege as a state. Those who are attacking us must have a face, a motive, and a mission. They drag people out, kill them, and occupy their land. This is extremely unacceptable,” Alia declared.
Governor Alia also warned politicians against exploiting the situation for political gain, urging them to stay clear of actions that could further endanger the state.
“I invite you politicians to stay clear. Don’t be part of those who are attacking us. We have mechanisms in place to uncover those involved in the destruction of our state,” he said.
He emphasized that criminality should be condemned regardless of who is responsible.
“A terrorist is a terrorist, irrespective of ethnicity or religion. Criminality is criminality – period! Whoever commits it is a terrorist and should not be where the living are,” he added.
The governor’s remarks come amid ongoing violence in parts of Benue, with repeated reports of attacks on rural communities by armed groups.
