We Are More Concerned About Bloodshed Than Politicians – Sultan of Sokoto

Maiduguri, Borno State – April 16, 2025 — The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing security crisis in Nigeria, stating that traditional rulers are more troubled by the bloodshed than many political leaders.

Speaking at the 7th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council held behind closed doors in Maiduguri, the Sultan issued a strong rebuke to political authorities, lamenting the relentless killings across the country, particularly in the northern region.

“We’ve condemned these killings multiple times, yet the violence persists,” the Sultan said. “It’s time our political leaders and security agencies act decisively to curb this madness.”

The meeting, attended by more than 86 traditional rulers, focused on strengthening collaboration among northern leaders in response to the rising tide of insecurity. The Sultan urged unity and a more vocal stance from traditional institutions, emphasizing that their grassroots connection gives them a clearer view of the crisis.

He clarified that traditional rulers are not in competition with elected officials but stressed their unwavering commitment to peace.

“We are not in competition with governors or any political office holders. Our role is to support and collaborate with them in securing our communities,” he noted.

Referencing recent violent attacks in Plateau, Sokoto, and Kebbi States, the Sultan described the situation as “alarming and unacceptable.” Despite numerous public outcries, he said, meaningful action remains elusive.

He cautioned against the politicization or ethnic framing of the crisis.

“Criminals have no tribe or religion. Bad people exist in every community, and we must not allow division to distract us from finding solutions,” the Sultan said.

He called on political leaders, religious figures, and citizens alike to demonstrate sincerity and unity in confronting insecurity.

“Insecurity is a global issue, yes, but we must act locally and urgently. We can’t sit back and watch our people continue to die,” he added.

The Sultan’s remarks come amid growing frustration over the government’s response to insecurity, as communities across Nigeria continue to suffer from attacks, kidnappings, and displacement.
