Stakeholders Support Establishment of Ten More Colleges of Education In Nigeria
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas has stressed the need for equitable access to quality education in every region of Nigeria.
He said 205 Colleges of Education nationwide, are grossly insignificant when considered against the backdrop of Nigeria’s population of about 230 million.
Abbas made the submission at the
Public Hearing on Ten bills seeking the establishment of Federal Colleges of Education across the Federation , organized by the House Committee on Federal Colleges of Education, in Abuja on Monday.
He was represented by the Deputy Chief Whip of the House , Hon. Ibrahim Isiaka .
Chairman of the committee, Adamu Tanko on his part, said the establishment of the new Federal Colleges of Education is a critical step in addressing the gaps in teacher training, strengthening education sector, and building the skilled workforce needed to drive national progress.
The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleagues of Education,
Professor Paulinus Okwelle supported the 10 bills.
He however noted that states without Colleges of Education should be considered first, adding that Ten of such states still exit in Nigeria.
The Ten establishment bills, include the
Bill for an Act to Amend the Federal Colleges of Education , to Establish Federal College of Education (Technical) at Ogute Okpella, Edo State.
The sponsor of the bill Hon. Anamero Dekeri disclosed that the provision of technical skills in Nigeria is not negotiable following the increasing lack of unqualified artians in the country.
He regretted that Nigeria now depends on neighbouring countries for artisan needs.
Former Deputy Chairman, BUA Community Development Association , Okpella Zuwedu Oseni – Sanni noted that when assented , the College of education will be the first federal presence in Okpella.
Abdullahi Yakubu Imogie (Phd) and
Gerald Adewole (Phd), stakeholders from Edo State who attended the public hearing lauded the foresight of Hon. Dekeri for sponsoring the technical education bill.
They noted his passion for education and the unwavering determination to uplift his constituents and
appealed for further cooperation from the lawmakers and the president in ensuring that the bill becomes an Act of parliament.
