Awka, Anambra State — The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the death of Inspector Okolie Amechi, who was accidentally shot by his 10-year-old son in a tragic incident that occurred on Sunday evening.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the incident happened when the boy unknowingly pulled the trigger of an AK-47 rifle assigned to his father, striking him in the back.
The inspector’s second child was also injured during the incident, sustaining a gunshot wound to the hand.
“The Anambra State Police Command expresses sadness over the unfortunate incident that led to the death of Inspector Okolie Amechi in Awka,” the statement read. “The son, unaware of the state of the rifle, pulled the trigger, hitting his father and also injuring his sibling.”
Inspector Amechi was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel. The injured child is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be responding well.
The police further confirmed that the rifle involved in the accidental discharge has been recovered, and the remains of the deceased have been deposited in a morgue.
While expressing condolences to the family and friends of the late officer, the Command also wished the injured child a speedy recovery.
