2027 Polls:
INEC Moves To Tackle Voter Apathy Through NOA Partnership
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Joash Amupitan, has called for stronger collaboration between INEC and the National Orientation Agency to tackle voter apathy and misinformation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, to the INEC headquarters in Abuja, Amupitan said technology alone cannot guarantee credible elections without informed and active citizens.
He noted that while INEC has strengthened the electoral process through the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, and the INEC Result Viewing Portal, IReV, many Nigerians still lack adequate knowledge of the electoral process.
The INEC Chairman said recent elections in the Federal Capital Territory and Ekiti State demonstrated improvements in election administration but also exposed persistent voter apathy and confusion over polling unit changes and voter registration transfers.
Amupitan urged both institutions to immediately begin joint nationwide voter education campaigns against vote-buying and misinformation ahead of the 2027 elections, pledging INEC’s full support for the partnership.
