Abuja — The Federal Government has issued a 14-month deadline to Infiouest Construction Company for the completion of Section II of the N777 billion Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria Road reconstruction project.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, during the flag-off ceremony at Jere, located in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Project Overview and Contract Update
Section II of the road, valued at N525 billion, was awarded to Infiouest Construction Company following the revocation of the original contract with Julius Berger Plc due to cost variation disagreements. The revised project will feature concrete-reinforced pavement, a shift from traditional asphalt to enhance durability and longevity.
Scope of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road
Minister Umahi provided details on the broader 700-kilometre road project, segmented into three sections:
-
Section I: Covers Abuja to Kaduna (via Niger State)
-
Section II: Now awarded to Infiouest
-
Section III: From Zaria to Kano, substantially completed by Julius Berger
According to Umahi, 240 kilometres of road between Zaria and Kano have already been completed, while the remaining 280 kilometres (140 km x 2 lanes) will now be constructed with concrete pavement.
Additional Upgrades
The Minister also disclosed that:
-
An additional 11 kilometres of road extending to Aminu Kano International Airport have been included in the scope.
-
Solar-powered streetlights will be installed along the entire stretch to improve safety and nighttime visibility.
-
Sections I and III, totaling 118 kilometres, have also been re-awarded at N252 billion.
Collaboration with Kaduna State
Umahi praised Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for his unwavering support of the federal government’s infrastructure agenda. He emphasized that the project would ease traffic congestion, reduce accident rates, and boost economic activities across the corridor.
“Under your leadership, these 700 kilometres of roads will be completed, courtesy of our dear President,” Umahi said, referencing President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s road infrastructure.
