FG Inaugurates Committee for 2025 Democracy Day Celebration

Abuja, June 5, 2025 – The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee to coordinate and deliver a befitting celebration for the 2025 Democracy Day. The committee is tasked with organizing a series of events to commemorate the country’s democratic journey and honor the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

At the inauguration ceremony held in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON—represented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu—emphasized the significance of the day. He described Democracy Day as an opportunity for national reflection on the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s founding fathers and pro-democracy advocates.

“This year’s Democracy Day is a time to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of our founding fathers who secured independence for our nation, and the democratic champions who fought to reclaim power from military rule,” Bagudu said. “Celebrating this day honors their legacy and affirms their place in history.”

He also noted that the annual celebration offers the government a platform to showcase its achievements and present a scorecard to Nigerians. He charged the committee to align its efforts with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to ensure a successful and meaningful celebration.
