The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London after a brief illness.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on Monday in a statement issued on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He said the holiday is set aside for national reflection and to celebrate the life and legacy of the late statesman.
“President Tinubu has approved Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a work-free day for all Nigerians, in remembrance of a man whose life was defined by sacrifice, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to national service,” the statement read.
The government encouraged citizens to use the day to pray for the repose of Buhari’s soul and reflect on his values of patriotism and integrity.
President Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State between 1983 and 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
Funeral arrangements, the statement added, will be announced by the family in collaboration with the Federal Government.
