The Enugu State Police Command has dismissed media reports alleging the killing of 25 persons by suspected herdsmen in the Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, describing the claims as false, sensational, and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
Several media platforms had earlier reported a wave of violence allegedly perpetrated by suspected Fulani herdsmen in agrarian communities within the area. According to these reports, about 25 people were said to have been killed, many others injured, and several residents displaced, with some fleeing to neighbouring states like Anambra and Kogi for safety.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the Command’s Spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the police strongly refuted these allegations, stating that the reports contained fabricated names and incidents that never occurred.
“The report is speculative and lacks credibility, particularly in its use of vague terms such as ‘at least,’ which have no place in factual journalism,” Ndukwe stated.
He further quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, as condemning the spread of such inaccurate and baseless information, warning that it only serves to incite fear and undermine public trust in the security agencies.
“While we acknowledge the media’s responsibility to inform the public, including the use of engaging headlines, we strongly condemn the publication of such mischievous and unfounded reports designed to cause unnecessary panic,” the statement added.
The Command reassured residents of its continued dedication to maintaining peace and security across Enugu State. It urged the public to disregard the false claims and remain confident in the capacity of the police and other security agencies to protect lives and property.
