The Edo State Government wishes to inform the general public that it is fully aware of the recent outbreak of diphtheria reported in parts of the State.
In response, the administration of His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo, has activated an emergency public health response, deploying all necessary resources and expertise to contain the situation and safeguard the health of residents.
Governor Okpebholo, demonstrating decisive leadership, is personally overseeing surveillance and monitoring efforts, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health and other key stakeholders, to ensure a swift and effective response.
Key interventions currently underway include the procurement of life-saving vaccines to launch an immediate, statewide vaccination campaign, particularly targeting vulnerable groups—especially children. In addition, public sensitization efforts have been intensified across radio, television, social media, and community outreach platforms to educate residents on the symptoms of diphtheria, preventive measures, and the importance of early treatment.
Hospitals across the State have been placed on high alert and directed to enhance case detection, prompt isolation, and clinical management of suspected cases in line with national and international best practices.
Medical personnel are being fully briefed and equipped to respond effectively, while the State’s disease surveillance network is being expanded to ensure prompt contact tracing and monitoring.
The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, is at the forefront of the medical response, working round-the-clock with the State’s Emergency Health Task Force to curb the spread and keep the public informed with timely updates.
Furthermore, school owners and proprietors are actively cooperating with the Government to implement early warning systems, enforce hygiene standards, and carry out health screenings where necessary to protect schoolchildren, who are among the most vulnerable.
Governor Okpebholo has also convened a multi-sectoral emergency meeting involving representatives from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), World Health Organization (WHO), traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and community development associations. The meeting aims to synchronize efforts and strengthen the overall response framework.
The Government assures the public that the situation is under control and that there is no cause for panic. Edo State has a proven track record in managing public health emergencies, and this case is no exception.
Governor Okpebholo calls on citizens to remain calm but alert. Residents are urged to report any symptoms such as sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands, or difficulty breathing to the nearest healthcare facility immediately.
The Government also appeals to all residents to cooperate with health officials and actively participate in the ongoing vaccination and public awareness campaigns.
Edo State remains steadfast in its commitment to the health and well-being of its people and will leave no stone unturned in ensuring this outbreak is swiftly and permanently contained.
