Edo Government Reintroduces Monthly Sanitation, Intensifies Waste Management Efforts

BENIN CITY – May 14, 2025

The Edo State Government, under the leadership of Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reintroduced the monthly environmental sanitation exercise last held in 2018, as part of renewed efforts to improve waste management and promote environmental sustainability.

The initiative was the focus of a stakeholders’ engagement held recently, bringing together key actors in the environmental sector to review ongoing strategies and chart a path toward a cleaner Edo State.

Speaking at the event, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability, Jude Ekpu, reiterated the state’s commitment to restoring environmental discipline and improving public hygiene through regular sanitation and proper waste disposal.

The Managing Director of the Edo State Waste Management Board, Mr. Lucky Inegbenehi, described the campaign for a cleaner Edo as a collective responsibility that requires the active involvement of all stakeholders.

Inegbenehi outlined several achievements recorded under the Okpebholo administration, including the acquisition of three payloaders, two compactors, and two tippers to boost waste collection capacity. He also noted the evacuation of over 150 tonnes of waste from major markets, the maintenance and construction of road paths at dump sites, and the engagement of 500 additional street sweepers across the state.

Present at the meeting were waste managers, scrap dealers, environmental enforcement officers, and representatives from civil society organizations.

Participants proposed various strategies to enhance cleanliness across Edo State and pledged to ensure the success of ongoing environmental sustainability initiatives.

The Edo Waste Management Board emphasized its vision to position the state as one of the cleanest in Nigeria through a combination of policy enforcement, community engagement, and strategic investments in waste infrastructure.
