The House of Representatives has reversed its decision on the proposed legislations to remove immunity for the Vice President, Governors, and their Deputies.Its decision on the bill to review the death penalty law in Nigeria was also recinded.
The resolution was announced during Thursday’s plenary session by House Leader, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere.
Both bills had passed the second reading on Wednesday, as part of the 42 proposed legislations considered during the session.However, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the plenary in the absence of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, explained that the reversal was necessary to allow for a more in-depth debate by lawmakers.
He apologized to the sponsors of the bills noting that the decision will allow the House to engage in further deliberations, giving the importance and significance of the subject matter.
