Chief Imam Contradicts Police Account, Says ₦6.5m Ransom Secured His Release

The Chief Imam of Uromi Central Mosque, Imam Muhammad Murtadha Obhakhobo, has refuted claims by the police regarding the circumstances of his release from abduction, stating that he regained freedom after paying a ₦6.5 million ransom.

In an exclusive off-camera interview with EBS, Imam Obhakhobo disclosed that he was abducted on July 9, 2025, along the Ubiaja-Illushi road in Edo State and released on July 13 after the ransom was paid, contrary to police assertions of a rescue operation.

“I was shocked to read in newspapers that the police rescued me. I paid ₦6.5 million to regain my freedom,” the Imam stated. He further expressed surprise at seeing another person’s photograph published in a report claiming it was his.

Earlier media reports, citing a statement allegedly issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command, credited the release to police intervention. Imam Obhakhobo’s account, however, raises questions about the accuracy of those reports.

The cleric explained that upon his return home, the Divisional Police Officer of Uromi Division visited to obtain details of his ordeal, which he provided. “It was disheartening to see conflicting reports in the media,” he added.

Despite the controversy, Imam Obhakhobo expressed gratitude to well-wishers for their prayers and support during the difficult period
