Lagos, Nigeria – May 3, 2025 — As the global community commemorates World Press Freedom Day, the Akuko Foundation, a Nigerian-based media advocacy organization, has issued a resounding call for the protection of journalists and the promotion of transparency within public institutions.
In a statement released to mark the occasion, the Foundation condemned the increasing threats faced by journalists in Nigeria and around the world. It decried the harassment, arbitrary detention, intimidation, and censorship experienced by media professionals for merely performing their constitutional duty of informing the public.
“Across many countries—Nigeria included—journalists continue to be targeted simply for doing their jobs,” the statement read. “From unlawful arrests to smear campaigns and restricted access to public information, these actions not only endanger individual lives but also weaken democracy itself.”
Akuko Foundation emphasized that journalism is not a crime, but a cornerstone of democratic accountability. It stressed the need for a free and independent press to expose corruption, uphold human rights, and enable informed public discourse.
“When journalists are attacked, society suffers,” the Foundation noted. “A thriving democracy requires a press that is protected, not persecuted.”
The organization called on governments and law enforcement agencies to respect international obligations and domestic laws that guarantee press freedom. It urged authorities to prosecute those who target journalists and to ensure due process for media professionals facing legal threats.
Additionally, Akuko Foundation appealed to public institutions—including those in government, business, and civil society—to welcome journalistic scrutiny as a crucial element of democratic development, rather than viewing the press as an adversary.
“As we work toward securing foundational support, we will continue to engage with media platforms to strengthen visibility and amplify the voice of independent journalism,” the statement added.
