Nigeria Customs Service Clarifies Viral Video of Old Shooting Incident

Abuja, June 3, 2025 – The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a formal clarification following the circulation of a video on social media showing a shooting incident allegedly involving customs operatives.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the NCS emphasized that the video, which has sparked concern among the public, depicts an incident that occurred more than six years ago—on Sunday, February 17, 2019—at the Shagamu Interchange in Ogun State. Contrary to recent speculation, the Service confirmed that the footage does not reflect any current event.

“The Service took swift action at the time of the incident,” the statement read. “A disciplinary panel was immediately constituted, and after a thorough investigation, appropriate sanctions were imposed, including the dismissal of the officers found culpable.”

The NCS reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct, stressing that its operations are guided by strict rules of engagement and internal procedures. It also urged members of the public to verify the authenticity of information before sharing such content online.

“We recognize and appreciate the public’s concern,” said Assistant Comptroller of Customs and National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada. “However, we appeal for caution in circulating misleading materials and advise citizens to rely on official NCS channels for verified information.”

The statement also highlighted ongoing reforms under the leadership of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR. These reforms include enhanced internal controls, capacity-building programs, and initiatives aimed at fostering transparency and strengthening public trust.

“The Service remains committed to professional and accountable service delivery, upholding integrity, and maintaining respect for human dignity,” Maiwada added.

The Nigeria Customs Service reassured the public of its continued dedication to lawful conduct, professionalism, and constructive engagement with the Nigerian populace.
