Ibadan, May 20, 2025 – A 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade, was tragically killed on Tuesday morning during a joint traffic enforcement operation conducted by the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA) along the Airport Roundabout in the Alakia-Adelubi/Airport Road area of Ibadan.
The incident occurred around 7:45 a.m. when a black Honda Accord with Lagos registration number FST 639 JJ, driven by Mr. Odunayo Alade — the father of the deceased — allegedly violated traffic regulations by driving against traffic.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso, the driver refused to stop when flagged down by enforcement officers. Instead, he reportedly rammed into two OYTMA vehicles and a Police Buffalo Patrol truck in an attempt to escape.
“In an effort to prevent further damage and harm to officers and other road users, barricades were set up,” the statement read. “However, the driver broke through the barricades and continued to drive recklessly, raising suspicions of criminal intent or possible abduction.”
A police corporal fired at the vehicle’s tyres in an attempt to halt it, but the bullet tragically struck Kehinde Alade, who was seated in the back seat. He was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was confirmed dead on arrival. His body has been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Johnson Adenola, deployed tactical and intelligence teams, including the Police Mobile Force (PMF), to maintain order in the area following the incident. Normalcy was reportedly restored shortly afterward.
CP Adenola has ordered a full investigation, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The officer who discharged the firearm has been taken into custody and is cooperating with the investigation alongside other members of the enforcement team.
The Oyo State Police Command has extended its condolences to the Alade family and promised transparency throughout the investigation.
