The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has proposed life sentences and the death penalty for drug peddlers in Nigeria.
Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye made the call in Abuja, while addressing State House correspondents.
Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye who urged the National Assembly to accelerate the amendment of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Act, called for the inclusion of life sentences and the death penalty to deter people from perpetrating the act.
She added that the Proceeds of Crime Act for forfeiture of assets recovered from suspects should be treated as proceeds of crime after their conviction by the courts.
The NAFDAC Boss underscored the importance of including these severe penalties in the amendment of the Acts as a deterrent to drug crimes, which have led to the deaths of several innocent Nigerians, including children.
Prof. Adeyeye explained that NAFDAC succeeded in removing from circulation 87 truckloads of banned, expired, unregistered, suspected falsified and substandard medical products from over 7,000 shops from three markets worth over 1 trillion naira as at February 2025.
Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, also expressed concern over threats to her life and the safety of staff of NAFDAC.
